On older British bikes the pilot bulb is turned off when the headlight is on

On more modern bikes the pilot bulb is not turned off. Because of heat this limits the pilot bulb to 10W.

Powerful quartz halogen bulbs for the standard BAY15d stop/tail lamp. Available in 6V 5/23W and 12V 5/35W these replace the bulbs shown in illustration 24 in the diagram of standard bulbs. They have been long term tested in the Lucas L564 plastic rearlight lens as fitted to British motorbikes from the mid 50s to early 60s and can be seen for miles. These are £9.95 ea.

These fit almost everything with a combined stop/tail bulb, excepting some vintage cars which had parallel pins.

We have had specially made powerful Quartz Halogen bulbs with fittings to suit the earlier British Pre-Focus type of headlamp fitted to bikes from post war to the 1970s and cars up until the introduction of the sealed beam unit.

In the late 1970s Lucas introduced the P36t 463. This was a 'half way house' between the British Pre-Focus bulbs and the later P45 & P43t. These had the British Pre-Focus fitting but with a H4 Halogen envelope in 12V 60/55W and the 3 spade push on connection. These are £9.95 Pt.no B1260463

The BPF type bulbs as above were superceded in many European and British export models with the P45t type base as in this diagram but shown with a Quartz Halogen envelope. Fitted to Kawasaki Z1s and Fintail Mercedes.

An adapter can be fitted to these headlamps allowing P43t bulbs to be fitted to a P45t headlamp £3.50

The most common type of headlamp bulb now fitted to cars and bikes is the P43t H4

This is a Quartz halogen bulb, but can be replaced with brighter Xenon filled versions.

The latest high output H4 is the Osram Nightbreaker with a claimed 90% more light which is 10% whiter.

I've put one of these into my Triumph Thunderbird & the difference is very noticeable.

This is the only low Wattage high output H4 available, ideal for smaller bikes with a small generator.

Contains rear, indicator, 2 x types of pilot and a H4 60/55W headlamp bulb as well as 2 fuses.

Carrying one of these is compulsory in Europe and always a good idea here. It fits under the seat on most bikes.
