Motorcycle headlamps
fitted with LEDs
Please read all of this, it will make sense.
On 11th Jan. 2021 there was an update to the Motorcycles MOT Inspection Manual. Section 4.1.4 has been changed to include:
'Some motorcycles may be fitted with high intensity discharge (HID) or light emitting diode (LED) headlamps. Existing halogen headlamp units should not be converted to be used with HID or LED bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp.'
This specifically states 'Existing halogen headlamp units should not be converted to be used with HID or LED bulbs'
British Pre-Focus, Bosch BA20d & Bayonet Cap headlamps are NOT halogen, they are Tungsten filament so are excluded. Therefore our LED headlamp replacement bulbs for these types of headlamp are not MOT failures. (Most of these bikes don't need an MOT any more anyway).
However, it does include the common H4 type. This was fitted to a few Bonnies, Commandos & Tridents in the 70s but has frequently been retrofitted as an effective upgrade to many older bikes since. This is now an MOT failure, so change the bulb before you have an MOT. From Jan 2021 if you buy a 12V H4 headlamp with a LED bulb (Wipac or Lucas) I will give you a std. QH bulb FOC for the MOT if wanted. (Most of these bikes don't need an MOT any more).
This does not mean that a LED H4 bulb is illegal, or using one is an offence - you cannot be prosecuted for it any more than you can be prosecuted for having a leaky fork seal & both are MOT failures.
